Oh la la…This is one of my favorite shoots to date. Probably because I worked so hard on it. Styled shoots are common in my industry and I’ve shot my fair share of them, but never have I pulled one together all by myself. It’s exhausting work, but the pay out was a whole lot of lovely.
Kaitlin contacted me early that summer to schedule a fun filled anniversary session for her and her hubby, Justin during their vacation to Los Angeles. Kaitlin herself is a photographer in Virginia and specializes in shooting military homecomings. It makes total sense…you see Justin serves in the Army. I myself have a brother in the Army so I knew I wanted to do something special for these guys. And after speaking with Kaitlin and stalking her on Facebook a bit and seeing how adorable they were, I knew they were a perfect for a styled shoot that I had been dreaming up for months!
You see, I have love for all things bohemian and I never tire of shooting this style. I think I was hippie in a previous life. Cue the vintage VW bus. Bill from Vintage Surfari rented us this amazing teal bus which served as our amazing wow factor and Alexandra from Archive Rentals helped me select a few complimentary pieces including those great turquoise chairs. From there I went completely DIY – I woke up early the morning prior to the shoot and robbed my neighbor’s large eucalyptus tree of a few branches….okay, a lot of branches to create the table garland. And a quick run to the LA flower market yielded a great array of blooms including dahlias, ranunculus, peonies, and ginger stems. Oh and that cake……thank you Betty Crocker! I finished the look with a lot of amazing finds from Anthropologie (tableware) and Urban Outfitters (rug). The end result was exactly as I pictured it and the gorgeous Malibu canyons serving as the backdrop brought everything together. <Insert Happy Dance>
So yes, it was undertaking of epic proportions, but it was amazing. Kaitlin and Justin were incredible and I was so excited that I had the opportunity to show them a little piece of California that may have gone unseen to them. In addition, this session was picked up and published by Green Wedding Shoes just a few weeks ago. This is my first with GWS and I was over the moon excited! And the cherry on top – I later learned that Kaitlin was a few weeks into her first pregnancy while we were shooting! I’m so excited for the two of them and the family that they are creating. Congrats guys!
